Consideration for Assistive Technology

AT Consideration   http://www.wati.org/bestpractices/consideration.html

Questions About AT Consideration   http://www.wati.org/bestpractices/questions.html

When considering a student's need for assistive technology these quality indicators are important:

  • the IEP team has the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions;

  • a continuum of AT devices and services is explored;

  • IEP team uses good team process to make decisions;

  • decisions are made based on IEP/IFSP/ITP goals and objectives;

  • team decisions are made in compliance with federal and state statutes;

  • determination of need is based on data about student, environments, tasks and tools; and

  • decisions and supporting data are documented.

Zabala, Reed, & Korsten, (1999)

Once a decision has been made to request a full AT evaluation during the ‘consideration’ process, a list of questions should be developed, indicating areas of concern and questions which should be addressed during the full evaluation.  These should include questions relating to the specific difficulties the student is experiencing, information about challenges and needs as well as strengths, and specific questions relating to areas in which assistive technology might be of assistance to the student.
