Adaptive Access Assessment

What is an AT evaluation?

Evaluation, although a discrete event in the service delivery process, is an ongoing series of deliberate activities over time from initial intake through
the use of AT (Bain, Dooley, & Leger, 1997; Cook & Hussey, 2002; U.S.
Department of Education, 2000).

An AT evaluation and Action Plan determines Potential Assistive Technology Solutions which include:

  • Devices and equipment

  • Systems

  • Methods and procedures for  trials, training, implementation, integration into the curriculum, reporting and recording, decision making, services.

ESSENTIAL KEY POINTS:

  • Assessment for assistive technology is NOT a quick  “this is on the shelf, let’s grab it and see if it works for him”!

  • Assistive Technology assessment does NOT decide purely the type of TOOL or TOY!

  • Assistive Technology assessment should not be focused on the equipment.

  • During the AT evaluation, the following are taken into account

  • Evaluation is an ongoing process in AT service delivery.

  • Evaluation of effectiveness is a dynamic, responsive, ongoing process that should be periodically reviewed.
